Tipped as the overwhelming favourite for the European title in the Euro RX5 category, Martin Juga fully lived up to expectations on Saturday in Riga.

The former RallyX competitor currently sits at the top of the intermediate standings with a commanding 21-point advantage over his nearest rival after setting the fastest time in Q1, Q2 and Q3.

Despite operating below full fitness, the Latvian delivered an impressive display of control and consistency throughout the opening day of competition. More than enough to immediately establish himself as the benchmark of the RX5 field in Riga.

“Honestly, one of the main things holding me back a little today is that I’m sick. But despite that, everything went really well.”

Author of three consecutive benchmark performances, Juga notably made the difference on the starts while maintaining a particularly composed approach throughout the heats.

“The starts were really good and, on my side, I tried to stay quite calm in the way I approached the driving.”

With the introduction of the new tyres significantly changing the driving characteristics of the cars, the Latvian believes the key to Saturday’s performance lay in understanding how to exploit the tyres without exceeding their limits.

“With these new tyres, the driving style is very different from what we were used to before. You can’t attack as aggressively as you could in the past. You really have to feel the limit of the tyre and be extremely clean with the car. Today, we managed to find that balance.”

Without committing any major mistakes across the three qualifying heats, Juga gradually built his advantage through a disciplined and controlled performance.

“Overall, the day went by without any major mistakes. There were a few small imperfections, sometimes braking a bit too late, but generally speaking it was a very clean day.”

Aware that tyre management could become one of the decisive factors during the final day of competition, the provisional championship leader nevertheless insists his team has already prepared several strategic scenarios.

“We already have a tyre strategy in place and we decided to make the biggest push today.”

Although the Latvian admits there was still room for improvement in the way he managed the tyres, he remains in a particularly comfortable position heading into the knockout stages.

“Of course, I probably could have been a bit cleaner with my driving and saved a little more tyre, but at the moment we’re in quite a comfortable position on that side.”

Armed with a substantial lead in the intermediate standings, Juga will now head into Sunday aiming to maintain his dominance while carefully managing his resources.

“I think we’ll be able to manage the situation well tomorrow too. Now the main goal is simply to recover physically a little and be in better shape for Sunday.”
